As a leading distributor and broker of aquatic feed ingredients, PRIMARE closely follows trends and developments in the global aquaculture industry. One recent trend that has caught our attention is the emergence of shrimp as the top consumer of marine ingredient resources worldwide. According to a review of global marine ingredient production by the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organization (IFFO), shrimp aquaculture surpassed salmonids as the biggest user of marine ingredients in total in 2021. This change marks a significant shift in the aquaculture sector, as salmonids had previously held the mantle as the greatest user of marine ingredients by volume.
The data shows that the growth in shrimp production globally, particularly in regions like Ecuador in South America, has been a major factor driving this change.
While feed conversion ratios between the two sectors are only marginally different, with shrimp aquaculture being slightly less efficient than salmonids, demand for fishmeal is driving the majority of marine ingredient use in shrimp aquaculture.
As a distributor and broker committed to sustainable and ethical sourcing of aquatic feed ingredients, PRIMARE understands the importance of responsible marine ingredient use in the aquaculture industry. We work closely with our suppliers and clients to ensure that the products we distribute and broker meet our strict standards and are sourced sustainably.
While it remains to be seen if shrimp will maintain their position as the top consumer of marine ingredient resources into the future, PRIMARE will continue to monitor industry trends and provide our clients with the highest quality aquatic feed ingredients available.
